ATP Finals 2024 in Turin: TRH History and Analysis

The 2024 ATP Tour season wraps up with the thrilling Turin Finals, also known as the Masters Tournament. It’s the perfect time to dive into the historical rankings of this prestigious event in the ATP Era, based on the Tennis Race for History (TRH) criteria.

ATP Finals History: A Journey Through Time

The tournament we now call the ATP Finals has undergone several name changes over the years:

- Tour Finals (2017-2024)

- ATP World Tour Finals (2009-2017)

- Tennis Masters Cup (2000-2008)

- ATP Tour World Championships (1990-1999)

Additionally, the 90s saw the Grand Slam Cup, a unique event featuring the best performers across the 4 Grand Slams. However, this tournament isn't included in our TRH tables (if it were, Pete Sampras would add 2 more titles to his tally).

Roger Federer: The ATP Finals TRH Leader

At the top of the ATP Finals historical leaderboard is Roger Federer, who holds the most points (15,600) and 6 trophies. Though Novak Djokovic surpassed him in titles with 7 wins, his total points (14,100) still fall short of the Swiss legend.

One memorable moment was the 2014 edition, where Djokovic claimed victory after Federer withdrew before the final due to an injury sustained in a grueling semi-final against Stan Wawrinka.

Other Tournament Dominators

Third in the historical ranking is Pete Sampras, with 5 titles and 9,700 points. Following him are legends like Boris Becker, Alexander Zverev, and Lleyton Hewitt, each with 2 trophies.

Looking back to the pre-ATP Era, Ivan Lendl also matches Sampras with 5 titles, followed by Nastase with 4, Becker and McEnroe with 3 each, and Bjorn Borg joining the group with 2.

Who Will Claim the 2024 Master Title?

The 2024 edition promises excitement. With Djokovic out, only Zverev and Medvedev can aim for a repeat title. Meanwhile, favorites Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are eager to clinch their first Masters title.

This year, four more elite players join the draw:

Taylor Fritz

- Casper Ruud

- Alex de Minaur

- Andrey Rublev

These competitors make the Turin Finals one of the year’s most anticipated tournaments, all vying for this prestigious title.
