In Malaga, we witnessed a vulnerable Djokovic and a mature Sinner.

Today, we share our impressions of the 2023 Davis Cup in Malaga, where a part of the TRH team had the opportunity to attend. Upon conclusion, we must commend the success of the organization, which, this time, drew a large audience to the stands, notably Finns, English, and Italians.

 

In an unexpected turn of events, the favorite, Serbia, led by Djokovic, fell in the semifinals. Djokovic, arriving as the Invincible TRH in 2023 after his triumph in the ATP finals in Torino, displayed a more vulnerable side this time.

 

Until the Malaga event, Tennis Race for History was on the verge of considering him the Invincible TRH 2023. Unfortunately, he couldn't maintain the record, resulting in a 55-7 win-loss balance for 2023, translating to an 88.7% win rate. This narrow margin cost him our title.

 

However, Novak has set a new record this year by surpassing Hewitt's points as the tennis player with the most TRH points in the Davis Cup. With 1825 points and 40 victories in his career, he unquestionably deserves our AWARD in the Davis Cup category.

 

 

What we witnessed, though, was the definitive emergence of Janik Sinner and the introduction of another promising player under 20 years old, Mateo Arnaldi, who will join the ranks of twenty-year-olds Alcaraz and Ruud.

 

It's important to note that in team tournaments, unlike individual competitions, players do not compete in isolation; they have the direct support of teammates, the captain, and the audience, especially in the Davis Cup. This unique team dynamic enhances the overall experience of live tennis, allowing spectators to witness the speed of the ball up close and the swift exchanges among these exceptional players.

 

These characteristics are impressive even among top professionals, particularly those in the Top 100. This is even more evident in the case of the sport's great figures.

 

In summary, it was an outstanding tournament, and Italy claimed a well-deserved title, its second. Despite the absence of the host country, Spain, the finals proved to be a success, notwithstanding recent criticisms (Hewit and Djokovic,e.g.) of the centenary tournament's current format.
